Coillte Photography Competition in First Class

4th Mar 2025

The children in First Class put a lot of effort in recently taking photographs of a tree or a place in nature they like for a Coillte competition. They also had to write a sentence to explain why they like that tree or place. Here are the photos that they took, along with their words. Thanks to the parents for helping the children with this. Not all children got to do it and that's fine, it's hard to fit everything in, but we can all enjoy the photos here along with the words! We may not win the competition but we still got out in nature to enjoy the places or trees we wrote about.

I like this tree because it’s tricky to climb and I like the added danger of perhaps falling in the water which has happened! This is me straight after school still in my uniform spending some much needed time in nature. I like how my arms look like the branches reminding me of how many similarities humans and trees share! - Lughàn

I like this tree because it’s a tree that I helped my dad to re plant in our garden. I watered it every day and now I watch it grow each year. - Alfie

I like this tree because its fun to climb on the branches and pretend the ground is lava, me and my brother like to pretend that we are aliens and this is our base - Robyn

I like this space because the tree is very big, it’s about 100 years old and it’s home to animals. Soon the sheep will have lambs in this field. - Donnacha

'I like this space because it is a really calm area.'- Finn O

This is my favourite tree because it is shaped like a leaf but is a full tree and once winter is over it will blossom and be full of leaves and flowers. Maci

I picked this tree as it’s the oldest oak tree her Grandad knows of on the farm and she sees it everyday though her kitchen window! Isobelle

I like this tree because it is huge and more than 100 years old. It is on my grandad’s farm and I love playing here with my brother and sister. My mammy played here when she was small and before that my grandad played here when he was small so it is very special! Lucy

I like this tree in my Nanny and Grandads house because it stops my footballs going into the field. The tree is about 30 years old and my Grandad planted it himself. Billy Byrne

I like this outdoor space because my treehouse, zip line and camp fire area, made out of fallen trees, is here. Mark

This is my favourite tree because it is in my garden and it has all my swings in it. I love playing in it every day! Doireann

Please see my picture attached. I like this tree because I love to pretend I’m swinging into it from my swing, like I’m Tarzan! Albert

I like these trees because they're on the way into my uncles farm. I play with my sisters here and we have so much fun. - Grace

The reason I love this tree is because it was my grandads favourite tree and it kept him so busy every autumn clearing all the leaves that would fall from it and onto the road. My grandad passed away in January this year and we all promised him we'd make sure we cleared all the leaves next autumn to keep the road clear and safe for the neighbours. Sadie

I like this nature spot because the trees are over 200 years old. This is on our farm where there is a small river. I find it very relaxing and peaceful here but also really fun and exciting when we have water fights at this spot. Will

I like this tree because the tree's branch is an L-shape and the top part is broken off. - Leonard

I like this tree because it has a scary face. It looks like a Halloween tree. - Samuel

I like this place because I can climb this tree and see a beautiful view of the sunset. Alice
